Started in 1983, the IITPSA Computer Olympiad is one of the oldest and largest competitions in the world.

The aim is to identify, encourage and reward computer aptitude and promote and encourage computer studies. Part of this is the Programming Olympiad, a challenge for learners who can use a programming language like Pascal, Scratch, Python, Java, C++ or Delphi to solve a number of problems.

As BSG strives to be a proactive force for positive force, the awards were a great opportunity for CEO Greg Reis to address the future of South Africa about living with purpose and driving what one chooses to work hard at, to ensure a life filled with meaning. Progressing from a first round of 6 934 entrants from 218 schools across South Africa, the 17 winners represented the top 0.25% of entrants. Yet this is not the only intelligence the winners would need and Reis stressed how emotional intelligence would be integral to the participants’ future success and key to leadership.

Initiatives such as these are key in creating awareness of career opportunities in ICT.
