On the 29th of February, BSG hosted and sponsored the Jozi Java User Group (JUG) meet up. The meetup centred on and explored the new exciting features of Java 9, scheduled for completion in May 2016. The content covered was valuable to developers of all skill levels, and the conversational format encouraged participation and discussion by all.
Richard Kolb, an active member of the JCP and other communities inside the Java space, demonstrated some of the significant changes in the upcoming release of Java 9. These included changes to the garbage collector; a new Java REPL; JShell, a native support for modules in Java via the Project Jigsaw; and assembling a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) that only includes the modules needed by an application, thereby greatly reducing the size of the JRE.
