Every year BSG offers Computer Science and Information Systems Honours students an internship during their June/July vacation.
The BSG internship programme is a unique programme, which has been designed with a developmental focus to ensure interns receive optimal value from the working experience. All interns are allocated both a Career Manager, who support their performance and development over the period, as well as a Mentor, who acts as their on-the-ground support based and helps the interns as they navigate through BSG, the project and the client environment.
At the start of the 4 week BSG internship, the interns undergo a personal assessment to identify strengths; growth and development areas as they pertain to core competencies for the role. This then translates into a set of robust performance goals against which performance is monitored on a weekly basis via 360-degree incremental feedback. These competencies are then reassessed at the end of the internship – providing the interns with a 4 week snap-shot of their development & growth!
Amanda from Rhodes shared “having the opportunity to discover the potential that is within through working amongst individuals who are driven to make a positive impact” was what she found most beneficial about the BSG internship.
This unique opportunity was offered to 12 deserving students from Rhodes, UCT, UP and Wits. In intention is to expose them to the working world of consulting and software development. Eager and energetic, they joined our project teams and were based at our clients from day one.
Experiencing first hand project work and being integrated into our BSG culture with a special welcome, continuous support from the whole business and finally a farewell gathering with all BSGers to see them off, bid them well and hear about their experiences during their time with us is all part of the BSG Internship package.
During their time with us they got exposure to our different capabilities and experience the real role of a business consultant, as Katleho, from Rhodes said “the opportunity to experience the work environment and put some of my knowledge into practice was one of my main highlights”. Jaymal, from UP shared “I enjoyed working with a skilled team in a fairly complex environment that guided and assisted me with care and understanding”.
Entering the work environment can be a daunting task for most of us, but with BSG internship the learning curve provides a platform for “discovering the implications of real world software development in a friendly supportive environment” – says Calvin, UCT, Comp Sci
BSG’s internship programme allows us to guide tomorrow’s consultants and developers on how they can be the difference. Davita and Craig from Rhodes shared “feedback provided to us enabled the identification of new strengths and areas for development and allows us to proactively critically evaluate our own performance, which was an invaluable way to turn constructive criticism into improvements”. It was also great to see the personal reflections coming through as Shado from Wits shared that her key take-away from the internship was “how much she grew and learnt about herself. ”
At BSG, we offer students from universities across the country permanent employment on completion of their Computer Science or Information Systems Honours. Our robust graduate development programme eases the transition into the working world by supporting their growth and continuous learning.
